How to Impress Your Vegan Valentine

How to Impress Your Vegan Valentine

Valentine’s Day is right around the corner. This year don’t wait until the last minute to plan something special for your vegan sweetie. If you want to impress your vegan valentine, here’s some of my top picks on vegan friendly romantic date and gift ideas in the New York City area.

Date Ideas

Pure Food and Wine

Pure Food and Wine

Say you don’t like raw food? Pure Food & Wine will impress die-hard carnivores as well as vegans like me who usually like their food cooked. With their stellar cuisine, extensive wine list and candle-lit ambiance, it’s the perfect location to bring your valentine for a romantic dinner out.

A vegan fine dining establishment in the Upper East Side, Candle 79‘s creative dishes and numerous wine choices make this spot a must visit for a date night, valentine’s day or any day.

Blossom

Blossom NYC

One of my favorite restaurants in NYC, you can’t go wrong with Blossom. With four locations ranging from the West Village all the way up to the Upper East Side, not only is the food to die for, the ambiance is quiet and candle lit. The Chelsea location is in the most romantic turn-of the century building, and if you reserve your table in advance you may have a chance to get one of their private, blocked off tables for two in their window. I can’t think of a more romantic way to spend the evening than watching over the wintry NYC street scene while enjoying a romantic meal with your valentine.

Gift and Treat Ideas

Sweet & Sara
Sweet & Sara

Marshmallows are not very vegan friendly, which makes me sad. Luckily Sweet & Sara, based in Long Island City, figured out how to veganize them and they make a variety of marshmallow based treats, from s’mores to rice crispy treats! You can find them in various stores throughout the city, or can order them direct from their website.

Dunwell Donuts

Dunwell Donuts

Dunwell Donuts has some of the best donuts in the city, nevermind vegan donuts. With fancy pants flavors like Chai Tea and Creme Brule, these sweet treats will bring a smile to your valentine’s face, especially if you get him or her a dozen.

Babycakes

Does your vegan valentine have any food allergies? If so, thanks to Babycakes that’s no excuse why they shouldn’t be allowed to have a sweet valentine’s day treat! Babycakes Bakery on the Lower East Side offers gluten, dairy, egg and refined sugar-free cupcakes, cookies, donuts and even a Valentine’s Day Candy Gram. Oh, and their icing is to die for!

Vaute Couture Apparel and Accessories

Vaute Couture

Thinking of getting your vegan valentine some jewelry? Vaute Couture in Williamsburg offers necklaces, sunglasses, and tees fit for the animal activist in your life. This V Necklace is currently at the top of my valentine’s day wish list.

Whatever you decide to do for your vegan valentine this year, don’t forget… kisses are free!

On another note, congratulations to Terry for winning the Anjolee Gemstone Pendant Giveaway!

Going to a Baby Shower

WHAT I’M WEARING // VAUTE COUTURE Belden Coat / Vintage Blouse / MAVI Jeans / TARGET Heels / CORNELIA GUEST Bag / SHOP MAMI Necklace (c/o)

A few weekends ago, Jim and I took a drive out to New Jersey to attend a close friends’ baby shower.

This was really our first set of friends in our circle having a baby, so I’m pretty inexperienced as far as showers go.  I’ve gone to lots and lots of bridal ones but baby ones are total foreign territory to me.  Getting dressed for it was kind of stressful.  Will it be all crazy girlie like a bridal shower so I should wear a dress?  Or is it going to be really casual?  I had no clue.  It was a co-ed shower which made it even more confusing.

I ended up deciding on a totally on trend black and white checkered vintage blouse I picked up a while back with a black blazer (which you can’t see) my trusty skinny jeans and heels.  Yes, the neon heels are back!  It’s been a while since I wore them and they were a big hit, especially with our friend’s 6 year old nieces who went crazy over the color.  They were so cute when I walked in, yelling “Mommy!  Her shoes are so bright like highlighters!”.

The outfit wound up working great because the blouse was formal and dressed up, but the jeans were casual so I would be good to go whatever the situation (which did end up being somewhat casual).

How did I do?  Any advice for me the next baby shower I attend?

What I’m Wearing // VAUTE COUTURE Coat // HANES Men’s Tee // AMERICAN APPAREL Winter Leggings // CORNELIA GUEST Bag // CONVERSE Sneakers // NYC STREET VENDOR Beanie // GIFTED Scarf

I’m totally phoning it in on this post.  First off, I was so lazy this weekend this is what I wore out in public when I had to leave the house.  Leggings, tee, sneakers, scarf (thank you Gina!), beanie.  Done.  If I had a choice, I wouldn’t have left the house at all.  I’m that lazy lately.  I took a five hour nap on Sunday I was so tired.

Second I really wanted to make sure I had a post up today but am having the worst day at work ever.  So therefore I’m not really in a writing, telling mood.

But hey, at least there’s an outfit post!

Vegan Winter Coat Roundup

12 Nov

This post originally appeared last week on my column Vegan Vogue I write for I Eat Grass. If you haven’t stopped by I Eat Grass yet, be sure to do so!

Vaute

Vegan winter coats have come a long way. It used to be the only warm options out there were synthetic filled puffer coats. While warm, it’s sometimes hard to feel chic and sexy when you’re all puffed up like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man.  Now with advances in fabric technology, vegans have many more options when it comes to selecting a coat to keep them warm all winter long.

While selecting new coats for myself, I had been on the lookout for a while for a vegan dress coat, as well as a warm, casual parka.  For my dress coat, I’ve fallen head over heels for my Vaute Couture Belden coat (shown on me above, $430.00).  The parka I eventually found and purchased is the Topshop Faux Fur Trimmed Parka below.   Mine is all black (from last season) and absolutely adore it. The faux fur interior keeps me super toasty.

During the Fall 2012 runway shows this past February it was all about big, boxy coat silhouettes. Just because you’re vegan doesn’t mean you can’t participate in this trend, there are tons of options!  Here are some of my favorite vegan friendly coat picks currently in stores.

Topshop Faux Fur Trim Parka $196.00

Topshop Neoprene Oversize Boyfriend Coat $230.00

ASOS Neoprene Coat $86.23 (currently on sale)

Topshop Petite Check Cocoon Coat $180.00

Topshop Faux Leather Trim Baja Coat $110.00

Old Navy Women’s Long Belted Frost Free Coat $95.00*

*Edit: When I first put this round-up together, the Old Navy coat was listed as being 100% polyester and had no mention of down in the product description at all, which landed it a spot on this list.  Looks like after this post was written, an upset vegan customer posted a negative review on the coat on Old Navy’s website stating they received the coat and were very upset that on it’s label it listed goose down as a material.  This was is extremely misleading based on the website description. Old Navy since has updated their website and it’s safe to say this coat is not vegan.  Sorry for any confusion!

What vegan coat are you wearing this winter?

MooShoes Fashion Night Out

MooShoes Fashion Night Out 2012

Last week for Fashion Night Out I got to catch the very last hour of the MooShoes event.  I had a business dinner I couldn’t cancel, and I rushed like a madwoman to get there.  What’s amazing is I made it from Long Island to the Lower East Side of Manhattan in about 20 minutes.  It was pretty insane.

I’m so glad I was able to attend, because they had some fantastic vegan vendors there.  In addition to meeting some of the vendor owners, I also met some Brooklyn Bliss readers, which made my day like you have no idea.  When I wasn’t gabbing my face off, I was checking out the huge array of vegan shoes, handbags, accessories and books. That’s the reason I was there, right?

When it came to doing some shopping, I had been searching for a sleek iPad sleeve for a while, and found a perfect Matt & Natt version while there.  I also finally after years of wanting one put in a pre-order for a Vaute Couture Belden coat.  I can’t wait to get it!

FNO / Moo Shoes

9 Sep

Last night, I met up with some friends at Moo Shoes in NYC for Fashion Night Out. In addition to having great vegan snacks and wine (OMG Dun-Well Donuts!), Moo Shoes was also offering customers 15% of their purchases that evening. I needed a new wallet, so I used a gift card Nikki gave me for my birthday and got myself a sleek Matt and Nat number.

Vaute Couture was also there with a rack of gorgeous coats taking pre-orders for the winter 2011 season.  I’m seriously debating getting one.  I’ve been hesitant to purchase one for a while without getting to try one on, and now that I have I’m sold.  It’s a beautiful coat.  Other brands also displaying at the event were Brave Gentle Man men’s goods, and Cri de Coeur with their shoes and handbags.  Drool.
